Today, broadband access became the synonym for fast and efficient Internet connection, which, among other things, enables wireless connection of users to the electronic communication network.
Aware of the fact that broadband access, without adequate content, is insufficient for stopping depopulation of distant islands, the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport, Central State Administrative Office for e-Croatia, Croatian Post and Electronic Communications Agency (HAKOM), and CARNet prepared a project enabling distance learning at local schools in poorly inhabited islands such as: Lošinj, Dugi otok, Krapanj, Unije, Koločep, Zlarin, Iž, Šipan, Lopud, Silba, Prvić, Ist, Olib, Ilovik, and Susak connecting them to main schools in the areas of Dubrovnik, Šibenik, Zadar, and Trogir.
In 2007, the Croatian Government approved the financing of this project in the amount of 16,6 million HRK.
eIslands project has been conceived in order to improve and advance educational processes on islands and in that manner to help island inhabitants continue living on distant, poorly inhabited and small islands. Designed in the manner to organise teaching classes with special work organisation for special forms of distant learning in the county centre or some other nearby city on a larger island within the framework of existing main schools. This system enables transition of picture, tone and educational material in real time. At the moment, within this project, 21 island schools have been connected via video-conference system.
